Blinded by the light

I know all I ever seem to blog about is fandom and K-pop and I’d feel sorry about it, but I’m not. If it makes it any better, I’ll try and keep this one short (hah who am I kidding).

  • WIN: Who is Next?

I started watching it last week and already, I can’t get enough. I’ve been watching the dance practice cuts over and over again because they’re so well-choreographed and executed to perfection. Here’s the one of Team B during the April Monthly Evaluations:

I’m still feeling Team B a lot more since they’re more bonded at the moment (let’s not forget the 불알친구–or testicle trio as I like to call them–made up of Hanbin, Jinhwan and Bobby). Bobby is probably my favouritest out of them all (including Team A) because he’s just a freaking ray of sunshine (his YG audition clip is the cutest thing ever, basically) and his Skype call with his family made me cry like a loser. And yes, he does kinda look like a younger, squishier Himchan.

I’ve also got my eye on Hanbin because he’s so goddamned talented, not to mention he’s leading a team of six and he’s only 17 years old???? The other Team B members look really precious too but since they haven’t gotten much screentime, I don’t have much to comment on.

As for Team A, I do like most of them, particularly Minho (so. talented.) and Seunghoon. I really liked what we saw of Seunghoon in Episode 1 where he shared about how it’s always been his dream to be a part of YG Entertainment and how living in a rooftop apartment so near to the building really just makes him want it all the more. And I know he keeps getting told off for his countrified accent but I think the way he speaks is so so adorable. I do agree that it does affect his rapping quite a bit and he definitely isn’t as good a rapper as compared with the other trainees. However, he comes across as mature and hardworking and just a generally really down-to-earth likeable guy so he’s someone I do want to see succeed.

The good people at WINNER SUBS are currently subbing the episodes at lightning speed, and you can head over here to watch them (as well as send the team a thank you!). Also: if anyone’s interested in reading some of my thoughts about the show, feel free to click here.

  • Bangtan

Speaking of talented young things, I’ve got Bangtan’s concept trailer on repeat ever since it came out two days ago. BTOB‘s ‘Thriller’ didn’t amaze me like I thought it would, but I’m hopeful Bangtan’s will. At the very least, I’m sure there’ll be kickass choreography involved.

The first episode of MTV Rookie King: Channel Bangtan also aired recently and I watched the whole thing unsubbed because that’s the kinda thing people do when they procrastinate from doing actual work. It’s sort of a mish mash of different segments, including parody CFs and variety shows, all combined into 1-hour programming. I quite like it despite only understanding a percentage of what was happening. The whole concept is cute and refreshing and I think it does showcase the members’ bright personalities a lot (though Jin makes me want to punch him in the face sometimes…..but then he’ll go and do the thing that makes me want to hug him close because he’s such a sweet guy).

And because it’s always funny seeing how teenage boys react to being pushed up next to a busty lady, here’s a cut of the elevator prank that was pulled on them:

  • Idol Championships

The first recording for the Chuseok special for MBC Idol Star Athletic Championships happened on 3 September and it’s really unfortunate but Leo ended up getting injured during the futsal game, and had to be replaced by Ravi for the next recording. (Aaaand this is where I casually insert pictures of a sweaty, dark haired Ravi.)

Anyway, I don’t want to speculate but obviously, the injury’s serious enough for him to need to be in a cast so I only hope he doesn’t need surgery of some sort and that it’s a slight fracture at most. Get well soon, Leo! (You can read more about what happened here.)

B.A.P also took part in the recording and I heard they’ve been absolute angels, picking up trash as they moved from location to location. But more importantly, can we talk about how Himchan looked like he basically floated out of heaven and landed on earth? He exudes rainbows and butterflies in every picture and his hair is the lightest shade of lilac and the perfect amount of fluffy. I…cannot think of an idol who’s more beautiful than him, I simply cannot.

  • VIXX’s goodbye stages

This shouldn’t be surprising because… well, when do I not talk about VIXX? As I mentioned, Leo suffered a leg injury and because of that he wasn’t able to perform this week’s set of goodbye stages for 대.다.나.다.너. He did the Show Champion stage on Wednesday somehow (even though they all look dead tired in that one) by sitting on a stool while the others danced next to him but today’s Music Bank stage was a five-member performance. Leo’s absence was definitely felt but I’m still utterly proud that Ken was able to competently take over all of Leo’s lines, high notes and all. My baby did so well!!!! *tear*

And just how attractive does Ravi look???? I love his hair so much and his whole outfit is just A++++. (On the other hand, I’m just itchy to rip off the pretentious-looking cardigan around Ken’s neck.) With promotions ending this week, I’m glad the boys can have a short rest before they have to prepare for their Milky Way showcase and start flying all over the place. I just hope Leo recovers in time and that he’ll be able to take part in activities as well because I can’t imagine having to rework all the choreo…

***

It’s finally the weekend!!! I’ve got a ton of things to get done, including readings that have been gradually piling up. And I also need to put up all my VIXX posters once and for all because right now, they’re just strewn all over the floor and honestly, my room’s not looking very pretty. But first, I’ll probably watch the next episode of VIXX File because it’s still Friday in my mind and responsibilities can wait.

“I’m busy, very very busy!”

Today’s post title, courtesy of Hyuk because this never fails to have me doubled over in laughter. I’m a weekend away from the official start of school, and I feel like I have to savour every single moment I have left because it’s just so precious. I’m not ready to once again be bombarded with the stresses of school life and endless deadlines /deep sigh/

TUESDAY
1. Thankfully, I managed to spend the past few days indulging, indulging, indulging — starting with finally meeting up with people I haven’t seen in far too long, in order to catch Fall Out Boy‘s gig here at Fort Canning on Tuesday. It’s the third time I’ve seen them live and I really do have so much love for these boys and the perfect music they make. ‘The Phoenix’, ‘Alone Together’ and ‘What A Catch, Donnie’ were probably my favourites of the night. It wasn’t the greatest concert I’ve been to because the setlist wasn’t the best (‘I’m Like A Lawyer…’ should have been on there!!!!!) and the members were all really quiet onstage, but! Patrick Stump‘s voice is just a wonder to behold. It’s Saturday already and I still have Fall Out Boy on repeat, and I’d catch them again in a heartbeat if they were to come here for the fourth time.

WEDNESDAY
2. This was immediately followed by B.A.P‘s second visit to Singapore. I feel like it was a lot more exciting when they came last year, for some reason, but I’m still glad I got to see them. I went for the press con under media as part of Dinoseoul, so at least I didn’t have to queue at an ungodly hour just for a good glimpse of the boys. My view in the end wasn’t great anyway, because it was such a huge public place and we were relegated to the last two rows of the media seats *single tear* When the boys came out though, all the media rushed to the front in order to snap better pictures and I did the same. We were all crammed at the front and I had to take pictures in between peoples’ tripod stands. Considering that, I’m glad my pictures turned out okay since I could barely see or hear anything they said due to how chaotic it all kinda was. To sum up, the boys were really polite, quiet and a little tired.

2.5. Dinoseoul can be found on Flickr now! We’ll be using it mainly to upload HQ pictures that we take at press conferences and events since FB always reduces them until they look like crap no matter how pretty they originally look. At the moment, HQ pictures from B.A.P’s press con as well as from Live on Earth Singapore can be found here. I’ll just share a few of my favourite shots that I took at the press con, just because. I took mostly pictures of Himchan because I had a pretty decent view of him and also because ~~*~bias~*~~ but I did snap a few of the others too (barely any Youngjae though, sadly). And I know the pictures aren’t ~koala tea~ since they’re nothing compared to what some of the other sites and especially the ones some of the fansites have taken, but well, I don’t claim to be some sort of professional anyway. I’m just thankful the lighting at City Square Mall was good and that I didn’t end up with a whole bunch of blurry pictures.

THURSDAY
3. B.A.P Live on Earth Singapore was the day after and I was a jittery mess on my way to the Star Theatre because I was so excited at the thought of finally being able to watch them perform live. I mean, I’ve seen fancams (A SHIT TON OF THEM, TO BE EXACT) and they only served to amp up my anticipation……which might also be the main reason why I ended up being slightly disappointed. I’d already seen every single performance that they’d put up that night so I wasn’t surprised in the least, so I thought maybe hearing/watching ‘Badman’ for the first time would make up for that and make the experience a little more special, but… we didn’t even get that. So yes, they were great live, but I wasn’t blown away and I just wish they’d changed things up a bit — for the special stages, at the very least.

I guess I’m just a little bitter because I know their Wanted concert in Seoul is going to be entirely different, particularly with the inclusion of all the new tracks and also because I know they really want to show Korea how much they’ve grown since the first Seoul stop at the start of Live on Earth back in February. I feel a little slighted, but… I’ll get over it. I’ll say one more thing though: Jongup is a complete cutie pie. I don’t know how many times I was giggling and grinning from my seat because he was being so cute I just- and I’m so happy I chose the right area to sit at because I had a great view of Himchan throughout the concert and HimDae!!! IN!!! MATCHING!!! WIFEBEATERS!!!!! /backflips off every available wall/

I’ll definitely go into more detail about the concert when I finally get started on the review for Dinoseoul. In the meantime, here’s a preview picture of Himchan taken by sexyvocal.tumblr.com since the original HQ one isn’t uploaded yet. This might be one of my favourite pictures of Channie, possibly ever. I break into a huge smile everytime I look at it–he just looks so happy and you can see his precious eye dimple in all its glory. (✿◠‿◠)

And finally, it was so nice meeting Vanessa for the first time (hehe and Marie too)!!! /squishes you both/ K-pop fandom can really suck sometimes, but sometimes it can bring people closer together and allow you to meet some really wonderful people too. Thanks to the two and of course Michelle as well for being such great company that day. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

FRIDAY
4. Today was a failed attempt at being productive since I spent the bulk of it sleeping, struggling to clean my room and only managing to neaten up a very very small part of it, followed by a 1-hour dance class with Cheryl (I hope you’re enjoying your dance classes so far!!!) and finally ending the night by making fudge brownies. Since my cooking skills are mediocre at best, I had to rely on a Betty Crocker ready mix that my mum bought, but since the brownies didn’t burn (….much) and they taste awesome, I’d still call my late night baking attempt a success. A+++++++ for effort. /dusts imaginary dirt off shoulder/

SATURDAY
5. Tomorrow I’ll be leaving my Dinoseoul shoes behind and stepping into my (very very dusty) Teenage-sized ones and okay, I have no idea where I’m going with this analogy… Basically, I’ll be freelancing for an article on SKarf so I’ll be heading to Korea Plaza in the afternoon for the girls’ press conference, followed by a one-on-one interview, which I’m strangely nervous about. I’ve never interviewed a K-pop group before! I hope it goes swimmingly and I leave with the information I need to craft a good piece. Wish me luck! xx

How to love

I just got back from CJ‘s Dansu Dansu showcase and it was a fun night, which I may (……probably not lol) blog about in the near future when the pics from everyone’s phones and cameras are slowly released on Facebook and everywhere else. Meanwhile, here’s a song that I’m completely smitten with:

Words can’t explain how much I love this song. It’s so pretty from start to finish and I’m not really enough of a fan to properly tell their voices apart (besides Junhyung since I’ve watched enough Monstar episodes to kinda know) but they all sound so good!!! I’ve given the rest of the album a cursory listen and it’s actually really good too though I definitely need a couple more spins to really fall in love with it. Great comeback, nonetheless.

B.A.P also released ‘Hurricane’ earlier in the week and I wasn’t all that impressed with the MV, but the song’s my new jam. It’s really different from anything they’ve put out before, and it’s totally something I can imagine playing at all the clubs but still, it’s completely impossible to not get into it. And can we talk about how they manage to squeeze in the whistling to every song ever and it still doesn’t sound out of place? My favourite part in the song’s Zelo‘s rap and the dance break where he raps again. And now I’m just picturing his giant head of curls and smiling to myself. Cute maknae is cute. But I’ll go into more detail about everything when I get round to doing my review for Dinoseoul…..which is hopefully soon. *fingers crossed*

This is why I’m broke

I haven’t been very inspired to do writing in any way, shape or form, but now that hell week is over, I’ve finally got the time to sit down and just breathe. While I’ve been too busy to write, sad to say, I evidently haven’t been too busy to buy things…..and this will explain why I’m perpetually broke. I haven’t used my DSLR since I went for NU’EST two weeks ago (oh GOD I still have to finish the article now that I no longer have camp stuff weighing heavily on my mind) so I took it out for a spin and snapped some pictures of the things I’ve bought over the course of a few weeks. All this just confirms the fact that someone needs to freeze my ATM card in a block of ice ASAP – Shopaholic-style…except that won’t help because of the wonders of Paypal and iBanking (╥_╥)

Unsurprisingly, every single purchase is used to feed my fandom needs, so I believe no further explanation is necessary. The thing with VIXX merchandise is that they’re such a rare commodity that just by owning all the albums, and now both the slogan and the Dream Concert lightstick, I pretty much have 90% of their existing official goods. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them, especially the slogan, but trust me when I say it’s reeeeeallly pretty and glittery. The combination of blue and gold is just to-die-for.

I also got a phone case from Etsy and I love it so much!!! The price is a little exorbitant but the quality is great and it’s just so pretty. Plus I’m still waiting for my issue of CeCi to arrive and I really should stop getting these magazines because they always end up just collecting dust somewhere but they’re so hard to resist :(

My ‘XOXO’ albums also came awhile ago and it’s a really gorgeous set of albums. The quality itself is pretty crap if I’m being honest – kinda similar to ‘MAMA’, since they’re both flimsy and will probably stain/tear easily but I really like the art direction with the whole high school/yearbook thing. It lends a personal touch to them and they just look really really cute! I love that the photocards look like ID cards too but the posters are kinda huge and besides the candid one, they’re not really worth paying extra for. I do strongly recommend getting both albums though!

Another album I bought recently was Bangtan‘s ‘2 COOL 4 SKOOL’ and it’s such a solid album both musically and physically. I love the lyrics to ‘We are Bulletproof Pt. 2’ so much and I’m really gunning for them to win the rookie award this year. They’re all so young and just oozing with talent. I was hoping my copy would come with a polaroid but considering my luck with these things, I can’t say I was really surprised that it didn’t. I’m still super happy with the album and it did come with a cute postcard! AND JUST LOOK AT SUGA‘S FACE ASDFLKJAKLJ

Finally, my biggest ticket item would be B.A.P LOE tickets which I queued up over 12 hours for and still can’t decide whether it was worth queuing for considering the seat I ended up getting. I met a couple of people in line – one of whom was a hardcore Starlight!!!!!( ´∀`)☆ – and they’re all really nice people so it did made the long wait a little less excruciating.

I still have a major bone to pick with Fast Track Events because would it be so hard to set a limit on the number of tickets each person can buy???? It’s annoying as hell because you have people at the front of the line buying close to 50 tickets at one time and it just sucks for the rest of us who queue overnight and still walk away with kinda shitty seats. I mean, I still managed an okay seat considering that, but if every person could buy a max of 2 or 3 tickets, then the seats we’d get would probably be dead center and really close to the stage so it’s frustrating. I mean, I was number 199 in line and yet, I’m 16 rows from the stage and all the way at the side…….ヽ( `0´)ノ I barely made it into Cat 1 and had to buy a single seat since that was all that was left when I should have been able to easily get a good seat and still be sitting with my friends. UGH not cool at all.

Furthermore, the first 200 in line got little slips of paper with our number on them so that we could claim our posters YET STILL WE DIDN’T GET THEM. Like seriously?! I don’t know if SISTIC or whoever gave out the posters either gave them to whoever wanted them or if they gave them out per ticket, I just know that by the 120+ person, the posters had run out. I mean, it’s not that I even really want the poster, it’s just the principle of it. Like why even give out numbers in the first place if you’re just gonna give out the posters however way you want to? Just…whatever. It’s over and I’ve got my ticket and I’m sure the concert experience will be worth it because I’ve been waiting forever to see these guys and hear all the LOE stages live and not just from fancams so I shall… look on the bright sideヽ(´ー`)┌

Midnight fangirling

I should really be working on my LC9/Bangtan article for Dinoseoul, but I’m so distracted because (1) B.A.P is finally coming back with not one, not two, but THREE title tracks!!!!! IS THIS REAL LIFE OR IS THIS JUST FANTASY and (2) VIXX performed ‘Light Up the Darkness’ live at their Lotte World event earlier today and oh god, I can’t believe this song has actual choreo and it is glorious asdasldkjfldk there are barely any fancams but I did find two good ones:

Ravi and N are the two best dancers in VIXX without a doubt (probably followed by Hyuk) so I’m not surprised at all that he rocked this choreo. There’s a huge disparity in the way they move compared with the rest and it’s especially apparent during the freestyle parts where they just move to the music and I’m not just making presumptions here because there is a fancam of Hongbin just awkwardly bobbing to the song during Ken‘s lines (here).

I just die a little each time the “work ya body” part comes on because just- the way Ravi moves, it’s like he’s really feeling the music and not gonna lie, it’s kinda hypnotising. He’s so comfortable with his body and he moves so effortlessly, I’m a little envious. Hongbin could learn a thing or two from his BFF…

Leo took out his extensions and he got a haircut and just… F E E L S. This is the best he’s looked since ‘hyde’ promotions started and I really love how he turns into a completely different person on stage, it’s so nice to watch. I like that even though he’s not technically amazing at dancing, he still puts in a ton of effort into the performance itself and there’s so much attitude and confidence to it. My bias, on the other hand…….. it’s a Leo-focused fancam but I crack up each time Ken gets into the frame because BB DID YOU EVEN TRY he’s just flicking his shoulder back each time, I swear to god. The only redeeming factor is how much I love his voice in this song because it’s the first time I’ve heard him go really really low and it just sounds so good.

Ending this short post with their Simply Kpop selcas because um, gorgeous.
